Un petit jeu...

Cette semaine, je poursuis mon exploration des accents avec une petite anecdote. L'accent circonflexe indique souvent la disparition d'un "s" autrefois présent dans le mot. Ainsi, "une forêt" s’écrivait "forest", le "s" s'est d'ailleurs maintenu dans l'adjectif "forestier".

A votre tour de jouer: pour chacun des mots suivants, trouvez des mots qui s’écrivent maintenant avec un accent circonflexe:

- festivités

- un centre hospitalier

- une arrestation

- un code vestimentaire

- défenestration

Quand je vous dis qu'il y a beaucoup de mots communs entre l'anglais et le français, je ne vous mens pas ! Nos histoires sont tellement interconnectées que cela laisse des traces dans le vocabulaire.

This week, I keep on my exploration of the French accents with a small anecdote. The "circonflexe" accent often indicates the disapearance of the letter "s" which was present in the word in the past. Hence "une forêt" used to be written "forest", the letter "s" can still be seen in the adjective "forestier".

Now, it is your turn to play: for each of the following words, find words which are now written with a "circonflexe" accent:

- festivités (festivities) » une fête

- un centre hospitalier (a hospital) » un hôpital

- une arrestation (an arrest) » un arrêt

- un code vestimentaire (a dress code) » un vêtement

- défenestration » une fenêtre

When I tell you that there are a lot of words in common between English and French, I am not lying ! Our histories have been so intertwined that it shows in the vocabulary.
